The brochure says “Preparing experts in Info Sec.” ….impressive words… we’re pros in marketing fluff….

I wanted a basic training in Info Sec and contacted this center, after struggling and insisting he sent me a link of SANS website..! Many thanks! as if i didn’t know!
I contacted EC Council, & they gave me an “accredited” training center. I sent to the training center asking for 1-the course outline 2-the instructor’s experience 3-the cost. The reply came “The upcoming event is full; next one is in Jeddah.” period. Okay, I replied “thanks for the response. I’d like to have some info about Jedda’s event” and asked the same Q. No more replies! Maybe they replied to my first email because EC Council was cc’ed!

In the other hand, I sent to a training center in London, they replied immediately with the info. She said “i’ll send u the instructor’s CV asap”.. After couple of hours she forwarded his CV to me… the full CV!
Yes, she did that because she wants to sell, and she succeeding in fulfilling this potential customer’s needs. The problem is when the seller deals badly with you, because… umm.. i don’t know why! Everyone has clients, and among the “Center of Excellence” clients are the people who want to be educated in Info Security, since they put it as a mission & as an objective!

    Problems noticed in KSA:
1-All info are “confedintial”, unless otherwise! Even knowing my instructor.
2-If you want to ask for my experience then you are humiliating me! I’m (in Arabic):”ash-har men nar 3ala 3alam”.. 3azamah 3ala 3azamah!
3-Many professors, sadly, tend to be arrogant! Although knowledge enlighten the mind! I didn’t notice that much in my university, but in KSU, based on tens of students’ opinions that I recalled after contacting a professor there, it clearly exists.

Now, I have to go to London to attend a training that costs SR15,000. FYI, it’s a bit cheaper than the one I found in Dubai.

“Center of Excellence in Information Assurance”…We have an info security center in KSA…. Hurray… i guess…

PS. I want it to be the best, I’m not pessimistic, but till now…

One more thing, please Waleed don’t delete the comment, unless you think it’s disastrous! I know criticism is not usual and not comfortable, but it’s healthy.. I’m sure you know that better than me.

Many apologies for this late reply..
I promise “again” to be more active!
    …………….
Dear Moshabab, Mansour, abdulrahman.almutairi and azure,
Thank you very much for your comments, they are highly appreciated.. :)
    …………….
    ………
    …..
    P.S. azure,

First of all, trust me mate, I have not and won’t delete nor edit any comment, unless it contains some obscene stuff, which, due to the quality of Blog visitors “sharwak”, I have not experienced yet. :)

Secondly, with regard to the QoS provided by the centre, I cannot prejudge, but let’s bear in mind that it’s a new centre and you know things take time to reach an acceptable level.

I do agree with you my friend about the professors’ arrogance unfortunately, however, I believe such things do happen in real life and trust me we cannot change them.. I agree as well that the QoS in Arabic countries, generally speaking, is in most cases quite poor..

Again, give the centre some time before you make your final judgement, and think of it that way:
having a centre that have not met my expectations, is away better than not having it at all! :)

    All the best,
    Waleed

To be fair, I kept watching their progress, and they do have some efforts. At least they’re better than our Saudi CERT which is barely moving, because it’s tied with a giant bureaucratic government agency. As far as I know, CERT teams begin from universities, but not in KSA.
CERT has a “dramatic” story (dramatic for those who care about this field), we’ll talk about it later if we got a chance.

Long story short, COEIA (its short form!) has something to do. It’s either was too early for me to judge, or was too early for them to advertise for themselves. I guess both. Apologies from my side!
